In recent years, new products and changes in existing products are occurring at an increasing rate and cause the life cycle of a product to decrease. To maintain market share, industries are forced to reduce product development time and bring their products to market as early as possible. However, with the changing environment that is characteristics of today’s marketplace, accurate project planning and scheduling for product development becomes difficult. It is important for an R&D organization to quickly recognize the impact of unexpected events and rapidly reschedule product development projects effectively. The objective of this research is to develop a methodology to reschedule product development projects to cope with unexpected events occurring during the product development. The research problem is considered as a partial constraint satisfaction problem. A constraint-based conflict detection method is applied to determine the violated constraints caused by unexpected events. The constraint-based simulated annealing approach is developed to iteratively repair the schedule with the minimum constraint violation cost. A hybrid heuristic that is integrated with the simulated annealing procedure is proposed to improve the solution quality. Computational experiments are also conducted to verify the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology helps project managers quickly recognize the impact of unexpected events occurring during the product development and rapidly reschedule the affected project activities. This agility allows the enterprise to take advantage of opportunities and to develop a product with less incurred time and cost.
