For the purpose of odor reducing in livestock industry,we used ammonia and hydrogen sulfide as the odor indicater and carried out a series of odor reducing experiment in the laboratory. According to the screening test for the biofilter has shown that the peat was the best biofilter to remove the NH3 and H2S under pH 3~4 and 60% of water holding capacity of peat. The physical 、chemical and biological properties of peat were determined. The optimal composition of peat biofilter was the full mixed of peat、KH2PO4(buffer)、rice bran(disperse agent)at the rate of 10:1:1(w/w). For ammonia removing experiment,we studied three test runs. In the first run,we observed its chemical changes under different loading, and estimated the mechanism of ammonia removing. In order to get the unit ammonia removial capacity,we figured out the breakthrough curve in the second run and got the value of 27.5 g-N/kg dry peat at last.It is a wonderful ammonia removal capaci -ty.In the third run,we compared the ammonia removal capacity with sterilzed and nonsterilized peat biofilter under the same operation conditions, we found that ammonia removing were pri -marily due to the peat adsorption and microbial biosynthesis. For hydrogen sulfide removing experiments,at first,we bserved its chemical changes under different loading, and dis-ussed the reason that there was not apparent biological reacationIn the second run,we used Michaelis-Menten equation to obtain theaximum removal rate--1.6g-S/kg dry peat.On the other hand,we knewhat there is a best removal capacity of 1.6g-S/kg dry peat underoading of 3~4 g-S/kg dry peat、a best removal capacity of 1.2gS/kgry peat under inlet concentration of 213ppm,and a best removalfficiency of 93.5% under space velocity of 72/h .They are theest operation condition for hydrogen sulfide removing.
