Embryonic Stem (ES) cells represent an in vitro system with which to study the molecular regulation of pluripotent cell maintainence and differentiation. This thesis describes work which was aimed at identifying cellular genes important for maintainance of the undifferentiated state of ES cells in the absence of Leukaemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) signalling. The project was designed to identify cell-autonomous factors that are capable of inhibiting ES cell differentiation.
