Meniscal tears are a common injury in athletes and are increasingly being repaired in an attempt to prevent the progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Of the different repair techniques that have been described in the literature, inside-out repair is accepted to be the gold standard and the strongest of repairs. Commercially available hollow curved needles (meniscal menders) have been used to perform outside-in meniscal repairs. We describe the technique of inside-out repair of the meniscus using a long straight hollow needle that can be easily replicated, involves minimal gadgetry, and is useful in a resource-limited setting. This paper discusses other advantages and disadvantages of the technique. |
