Popis: Clevert program ran between 2010 and 2013 in three French rural municipalities, ranging 600 to 1,700 inhabitants. We conducted biodiversity samplings, achieved a historic and ecological mapping as well as an anthropological investigation completed by a survey (questionnaires) so as to measure local populations’ attitude towards their environment. Local history was apprehended in people’s own terms and categorization, so as to identify factors relating social dynamics and environmental situation. Our research protocol had been previously tested among Amazonian traditional populations. Participatory methodology was meant to involve residents in the collection and processing of data, and to observe any change in the attitude of local administration with regard to the environment. This article focuses on the « restitution » aspect of the program—particularly participatory and sense of place mapping—and the lessons that can be learned about the dynamics of participation when scientists are involved in local policies.
