This work examines the issue of Environmental Education (EE) in the teaching of Geography in urban schools in the municipality of Japaratinga, Alagoas. This municipality forms part of the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protected Area (APACC in Portuguese). EE is an important strategy for disseminating environmental consciousness about the importance of the environment for society. Thus, it is worth emphasizing the important role of the inclusion of AE in schools. We understand that the teaching of Geography aims to train critical and conscious students about the relationship between society and nature and its influence in the geographical space. The inclusion of EE in the discipline of Geography, through its concepts, contributes to the understanding of the society-nature relationship and, consequently, to the formation of future ecologically conscious citizens. The study methods consisted of a qualitative approach, with, field research and use of unstructured interviews. The municipal schools selected for the research were based on two criteria, namely: 1. being located in the urban area of the municipality, and 2. offering elementary education II. Thus, the schools surveyed were the extension of the Municipal School Antônio Buarque Bandeira and the Municipal School Napoleão Rodrigues da Silva. Results showed that the two schools develop extension projects that were initiated by Geography teachers, namely: “Knowing and preserving mangroves” and “Planting water, growing lives”, in addition to field classes, lectures and science fairs about the EE. Although these schools have developed projects on EE, one of the schools surveyed does not mention EE in the developing version of its Political Pedagogical Project (PPP), since all municipal schools do not have a completed PPP, even though it is of great importance for all the schools |
