In order to legitimate the constitutional bases of his power, Joseph Bonaparte needed the adhesion of the Spaniards. The press destined to convince them to rally the new dynasty had therefore a fundamental importance. In 1809 Pedro Estala published forty issues of El Imparcial o Gazeta o Política y Literaria to both convince his countrymen that the real patriotic cause was the one of the Constitution of Bayonne and of what were the advantages of a constitutional system. The analysis of his discourse demonstrates how hermetic the Spanish constitutional culture was to the new theories of government implanted, in theory, by the Constitution of Bayonne. |
