INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of active and passive smoking on polycythemia in adolescents. METHODS: This study was retrospectively performed between January 2019 and October 2020 in 98 male patients aged 13-18 years who applied to the Department of Pediatric Hematology XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for polycythemia. The cases were divided into three groups as active smokers (23 patients), passive smokers (29 patients) and never smokers (46 patients). RESULTS: The frequency of smoking in the study group was found to be 23.4%. Carboxy Hemoglobin values of smoking patients were significantly higher. The hemoglobin values of active smokers were not found to be significantly different when compared with passive smokers and nonsmokers (p> 0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The rate of smoking exposure was found to be high in patients who were followed up with polycythemia during adolescence (53%). This shows that active and passive smoking exposure during adolescence is an important cause of secondary polycythemia. |
