Focusing on an organisation involved in the fight against “genetic” and “female” cancers, this article describes how a network of women has tackled the issue of genetics. Its activities contribute to strengthening the free care and health work of this gender group, which is already socially responsible for integrating health standards into the family sphere. Indeed, the ambassadors interviewed reveal a new informational and emotional preventive work linked to genetics, which they carry out with their relatives and the general public. As a result, their community involvement blurs the line between the so-called public and private spheres. Because mutation is hereditary, and because ambassadors socialise their children – especially their daughters – about genetics, this “double” free and gendered work is passed on from one generation to the next. |
