Abstract This interactive learning module describes the histological architecture of the liver lobule. The three-dimensional presentation and animations facilitate the visualization of the relationships between the basic components of the liver lobule: cells, blood vessels, and bile ducts. The microvasculature is presented in reference to hepatocyte metabolism and susceptibility to disease. Examples of hepatocyte pathology and stellate cell-induced fibrosis are illustrated. The learning module is presented in a basic descriptive fashion that promotes interactivity, starting with stated learning objectives and concluding with self-test exercises. While the target audience is medical, dental, or paramedical students, the module may be used as an independent informational unit suitable for learners with some background in histology or for medical board review or continuing medical education courses. This learning module has been implemented in a first-year medical anatomy course as well as a first-year pharmacy anatomy course. Students reported that the module facilitated their understanding and conceptualization of the three-dimensional nature of liver histology. They stated a preference for this mode of delivery of the material and felt that it was efficient and easy to navigate. |
