Popis: PKD2 was first identified as the pathogenic protein for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and is widely recognized as an ion channel. Subsequent studies have shown that PKD2 is widely expressed in various animal tissues and plays a crucial role in tissue and organ development. Additionally, PKD2 is conserved from single-celled organisms to vertebrates. Here, we provide an overview of recent advances in the function of PKD2 in key model animals, focusing on the establishment of left–right organ asymmetry, renal homeostasis, cardiovascular development, and signal transduction in reproduction and mating. We specifically focus on the roles of PKD2 in development and highlight future prospects for PKD2 research.
