Popis: Alcesti o la recita dell’esilio is a rewriting of Euripides’s tragedy. It illustrates the myth of the “best of wives” who killed herself to prolong her husband’s life. Giovanni Raboni revisited this myth and set up contemporary scenery. The drama takes place during a dictatorship in a country that he voluntarily hasn’t defined. The characters of the original tragedy are reduced to three protagonists: the couple made by Sara and Stefano, and Stefano’s father. A mysterious watchman drives them, through a thick fog until a theatre awaiting the boat that will bring them until freedom. Yet, the terms of the escape change: the three seats that were initially foretold are only two from now on. One of the characters has to stay in order to save the others. The theme of sacrifice and the responsibility it entails makes the text tragic. Do the structure of Raboni’s play and the mise en abyme of the Athenian tragedy offer a seat to Euripides among the survivors? Seemingly speechless and decorously veiled by the rewriting, the old Greek tragedian might stand with Sara, stowaway of the contemporary Italian theatre.
