This chapter sheds light on the manner in which healthy human relationships can be promoted in post-apartheid South Africa. It argues that healthy human relationships are key to any society’s development. Furthermore, this chapter introduces the text’s topics for discussion and proffers its purpose. This chapter presents the topics covered in different chapters that endeavour to show how healthy human relationships can be promoted in South Africa. All the chapters are either advanced from social work or social development perspectives. In this chapter, efforts are made to show how the country’s history is intertwined with contemporary socio-political and economic realities. To this end, this chapter presents a historical narrative of the country that goes back to the time when Europeans established their first settlements in this part of Africa and when they dispossessed the lands of the indigenous peoples. In addition, this chapter explains how colonial conquest and apartheid rule corroded existing human relationships, in the indigenous communities, at the time. |
