The Archives of Saemaul Undong (New Community Movement) are written sources relating to the movement for the rural development (of farming and fishing villages) spread throughout the South Korean territory between 1970 and 1979. These Archives are not limited to government documents, but include government sources produced at the village level by (Saemaul) community leaders, women leaders and community credit cooperative directors who wrote them in large quantity. Official documents related to rural development movements did exist in other countries, but the Saemaul Undong Archives are the only ones that have been preserved in such great amounts. In this respect, the archives that did not emanate from the state and the elites, but from people of villages and rural communities are very valuable. Therefore, the Archives of Saemaul Undong have been registered as a part of the National Archives of the Republic of Korea and, in 2013, in the Memory of the World Register of UNESCO, since they are “a valuable asset for humankind”. |
