De l’inauguration du canal de Suez en 1869, Louise Colet, correspondante du quotidien Le Siècle, tire Les Pays lumineux. Voyage en Orient. S’écartant de la satire des journaux européens, cette voyageuse consigne des observations sur le canal et commente la modernisation de l’Égypte, deux éléments qui aboutissent à son refus d’un scénario qu’on peut appeler avec Flaubert l’Orient-Isthme-de-Suez et conduisent à une démythification du discours univoque sur le canal. Colet soutient l’idée d’une « authenticité » égyptienne et condamne sa transformation par l’Europe. Following the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869 Louise Colet, correspondent at the daily newspaper, Le Siècle, wrote Les Pays lumineux. Voyage en Orient. Distancing herself from the satire of European newspapers, this traveller records her observations on the canal and comments on the modernisation of Egypt. In doing so, Colet rejects the Orient-Isthme-de-Suez paradigm, coined by Flaubert, thus leading to a demystification of the univocal discourse on the canal. Colet supports the “authenticity” of Egypt and condemns its transformation by Europe. |
