Popis: The ephemeral obsequies decorations appeared late in France in comparison with the huge machines exhibited in other European courts. Even if the Jesuits used to raise catafalques in their colleges to honour their great protectors during all the seventeenth century, the Menus Plaisirs only abandon the ancient tradition of castrum doloris in 1669 for the funeral of Henriette-Marie de France. Hereafter the funeral pomp was designed by official artists like Jean I Berain who invented several of the most beautiful ephemeral apparatus intended by the Throne. The catafalques erected in the entire French kingdom for the Queen Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche in 1683 show the maturity of this genre in France, celebrated by Ménestrier in the treatise Des décorations funèbres that he published in 1684.
