| Popis: | Noël Coward, modern döneme uyumlu töre komedisi oyunları yazmış olan bir yirminci yüzyıl oyun yazarıdır. Töre komedisi genellikle İngiliz Restorasyon Dönemi ile bağlantılı olsa da yirminci yüzyılda da bu edebi türe katkıda bulunulmuştur. Coward, töre komedisinin özelliklerini yirminci yüzyıla uyarlayıp eserlerine kendine özgün stilini de katarak bu türe ait oyunları başarılı bir şekilde yazmıştır. Dolayısıyla hem töre komedisinin özelliklerini hem de kendi özgün stilini eserlerinde görmek mümkündür. Bu çalışma Coward’ın Hay Fever, Private Lives ve Blithe Spirit adlı eserlerine odaklanmaktadır. Hay Fever eserindeki Bliss ailesi davet ettikleri misafirlerine iyi davranmayan bir ailedir. Private Lives ise iki evli çiftin bir üyesinin diğer çiftin bir üyesi ile birlikte kaçması üzerine kuruludur. Blithe Spirit’de ise bir roman yazarının biri ölü diğeri hayatta olmak üzere iki eşinin kıskançlık ve entrikaları ile ilgilidir. Bu üç eserin tümünde töre komedisinin genel özellikleri mevcut iken yirminci yüzyıla uyarlanamayan özellikler mevcut değildir. Coward bu eserleri komik yapan sonlardaki tekrarlı kaçış sahneleri de dahil olmak üzere kendi stilini başarılı bir şekilde entegre etmiştir. Diğer töre komedisi yazarları hakkında birçok çalışma varken Coward’ın en iyi bilinen eserleri hakkında çok az çalışma olduğundan bu çalışma önem arz etmektedir. Dolayısıyla bu çalışmanın amacı Noël Coward’ın kendi stilini de dahil ettiği seçili eserlerindeki töre komedisi izlerini analiz etmektir. Noël Coward is a twentieth century playwright who wrote comedy of manners plays that are compatible and adaptable to the modern era. Although comedy of manners is generally related to the English Restoration Period, contributions to the genre were made in the twentieth century, as well. By adapting the features of the comedy of manners and adding his own style, Coward succeeded in writing comedy of manners plays. The features and his own style are both seen in his plays; this study concentrates on Hay Fever, Private Lives, and Blithe Spirit. The Bliss family in Hay Fever is a bad-mannered family who do not treat their guests accordingly. In Private Lives, there are two couples whose one member of each flees with the other; Blithe Spirit is about the novel writer and his two wives, one alive and one dead, who are envious and try out various intrigues. In all three plays, the main features of comedy of manners are present while the ones that do not adapt to the twentieth century are not; Coward successfully adapted his style in these plays such as the reoccurring escape scene which makes these three plays comic. The study is important because there are many studies about other comedy of manners writers, but there are very few studies that deal with the significance of Coward’s best-known plays. The aim of the study, therefore, is to analyse the traces of comedy of manners in the selected plays of Noël Coward along with his integrated style. |
