Popis: The use of self-report instruments with offenders, especially sexual offenders remains highly controversial. However, self-report measures such as the Psychopathic Personality Inventory - Revised (PPI-R) yield potential benefits for a more parsimonious diagnostic approach, particularly when the availability of collateral information is limited. Consequently we compared three Belgian samples (community, delinquents, & pedosexuals from an outpatient clinic) with the Dutch version of the PPI-R in order to evaluate: the psychometric properties and effect of response styles. We also examined the construct validity of the PPI-R by projecting psychopathy total, facet and factor scores on the Interpersonal Circumplex and compared across the three samples. Finally, we explored the relationship between the degree of psychopathy and the amount of cognitive distortions for the pedosexual offenders only. The PPI-R exhibits satisfactory psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency (average alpha = .85) and expected subscale intercorrelations. Psychopathy total scores did not significantly differ across the samples. Consistent with our expectations, facets of psychopathy predominantly reflect an arrogant-calculating interpersonal (r=.23** - .67**) style across samples. Only PPI-R factor I was stronger correlated with an assured-dominant interpersonal style (r=.68** - .51**). The degree of psychopathy and amount of cognitive distortions were negatively correlated. These and other results offer strong support for the construct validity of the PPI-R (r=-.43* - -.57*). and will be discussed with an emphasis on emotional processing, specific sample differences, influence of response style, and practical utility.
