Clitics are unaccented words that are based on their adjacent accented words in a sentence. In principle, they never come first in a sentence, except in the case of an ellipsis. With this thesis, we wanted to verify this rule, as the historical review of the treatment of clitics alone indicates constant deviations from said rule – in fact, quite a few linguists have stood behind the opinion that clitics can come first in a sentence. By analyzing a corpus of randomly selected texts, we have found out that the using clitics to start a sentence is very common in the modern, spoken language. Therefore, the use of clitics deviates from the rules that originate from the old manual and which have also been used up to today’s Slovenian grammar (Slovenska slovnica). |
