Popis: A qualidade de vida dos animais é um tema pelo qual a sociedade tem apresentado crescente interesse. O mesmo pode ser interpretado considerando a sua inter-relação com a ciência do bem-estar animal, ética e legislação. A ciência do bem-estar animal nasceu na Inglaterra na década de 60 como consequência do mandato social em defesa dos animais criados intensivamente, e evoluiu com as ações do Farm Animal Welfare Council, ganhando força junto à sociedade, o que motivou a elaboração de legislações de proteção e bem-estar. O projeto Welfare Quality® é um exemplo de como os conhecimentos científicos podem apoiar a avaliação do bem-estar na granja e no abatedouro. As três linhas de pensamento mais difundidas que conceituam o tema definem bem-estar com base nas emoções, no funcionamento biológico e no comportamento natural dos animais, no entanto, há um consenso crescente de que o bem-estar é um conceito multidimensional que engloba estas três escolas de pensamento. A legislação europeia de proteção e bem-estar animal corresponde às normas mais abrangentes, sendo aplicadas nos âmbitos da produção, do transporte e do abate de animais, servindo como modelo para muitos outros países. O Brasil ainda não tem uma legislação de bem-estar animal bem completa e estruturada, deixando vários segmentos da cadeia produtiva de suínos descobertos. O estudo e a compreensão dos principais problemas de bem-estar que acometem os suínos do nascimento ao abate são o ponto de partida para a solução dos mesmos e a garantia de uma melhor qualidade de vida e produção de uma carne com qualidade ética. Entre os problemas de bem-estar dos suínos mais debatidos na atualidade se encontram o sistema de alojamento das fêmeas gestantes e a insensibilização com o uso de CO2. O entendimento científico dos sistemas de produção alternativos, caracterizados como “amigos do bem-estar”, pode fornecer subsídios para interações mais conscientes do tema. Neste sentido, a criação de suínos ibéricos no sistema extensivo representa um modelo importante de estudo. A relação entre o bem-estar animal e a produtividade é um ponto-chave de uma equação que auxilia a compreensão da gestão junto à cadeia produtiva dos avanços sustentáveis em prol do bem-estar animal. The animal welfare has been a subject of a great interest in our society. It basis is supported by relationship with science, ethics and legislation. The science of animal welfare was born in England in the 60s as a result of the social mandate in defense of farm animals reared intensively, and with the evolution of the actions of the Farm Animal Welfare Council, where gained by the society, especially considering the ethical, the support to elaborate the legislation for the protection and animal welfare. The Welfare Quality® project is an example like the scientific knowledge can contribute with the evaluation of welfare on the farm and slaughterhouse. Three lines of thought that are very widespread conceptualize the welfare, being the emotions, the biological function and the natural behavior of the animals, however, there is a growing consensus that welfare is a multidimensional concept that include these three lines of thought. European legislation for the protection and welfare corresponds the wider norms that are applied in production, transport and animal sacrifice, where can be used as a model for many other countries. Brazil still has no comprehensive legislation for animal welfare, leaving uncovered various segments of the pig production chain. The study and understanding of major issues affecting the welfare pigs from birth to slaughter are the starting point for their solution, where it can provide a better quality of life and produce a meat with ethical quality. Among the problems of the welfare of pigs the most polemic today, are the housing system of pregnant and stunning with the use of CO2. The scientific understanding of alternative production systems, characterized as "welfare friendly" can supply with consistence this question. In this sense the creation of Iberian pigs in extensive system represents an important model study. The relationship between animal welfare and productivity is a key point of an equation that helps to understand how the pig chain can prevent the sustainable advances in favor of animal welfare.
