Las redes sociales se han convertido en parte fundamental para la docencia universitaria en diferentes áreas de la medicina y sus especialidades; es así como la educación médica a incursionado en la implementación de ciertas herramientas informáticas o tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TICs) como ayudas en la adquisición de nuevo conocimiento; sin embargo en lo que respecta a las redes sociales, aún se identifican algunas falencias en el conocimiento dado el potencial que estas traen consigo como herramientas pedagógicas de alto contenido didáctico, y que por su poder de difusión puede abarcar un amplio sector de la población objetivo, en el caso particular del docente en medicina, sus estudiantes, internos y residentes. La especialidad de Obstetricia y ginecología no es ajena a estas dinámicas y es posible que la adquisición por parte del docente de ciertas competencias en el uso, aplicabilidad, difusión, producción y consumo de contenido en redes sociales podrían facilitar el ejercicio pedagógico y generar aprendizaje significativo, tanto en los niveles de pregrado como en posgrado. El presente ensayo tiene como objetivo mostrar la importancia de las redes sociales en la docencia de la obstetricia y ginecología, para lo cual se hará una búsqueda en la literatura intentando identificar los antecedentes de la aplicación de las redes sociales en la medicina así como en las especialidades médico-quirúrgicas; para posteriormente identificar experiencias en el campo de la obstetricia y ginecología evaluando sus ventajas y desventajas, con el objetivo de que la información obtenida se pueda replicar en la práctica docente - estudiantil .
