The continuos increase of hip prosthesis in the world will lead to a substantial increase in revision surgery in the next years. The main causes of revision are aseptic loosening of components and instability that lead to prosthetic implant dislocation. Generally revision surgery turns out to be complex and not without risks and complications. The loss of femoral bone stock, altered femoral geometry and romoval of the implant and cement can lead to structural defects. Preoperative planning is therefore mandatory and of huge importance. The objectives of the femoral revision are to reestablish the offset and the lenght and to provide adequate fixation of the components, giving joint stability. The femoral revision can be performed using implants with and without cement, depending on the presence of bone defects. There are several surgical techniques and implants that can be used in the revision process of femoral prosthesis. |
