Several articles in popular media repeat that our knowledge about the clitoris and female orgasm is incomplete or erroneous until recently. The Australian surgeon Helen O'Donnell is credited for the first anatomical description of the clitoris, in 2005. I show that Léo Testut (1901) gave a correct description and image of the clitoris, as do the anatomic atlases and textbooks used by the students at Ghent University (since the '50ties), at the University of Antwerp (since 1973), and at the VUB (at least since 1979; I have no data about previous years). I also described to my students the mechanisms of the female and male orgasm. That this knowledge is not taught in all schools and universities is related to the negative moral and religious appreciation of (female) sexuality and lust; as ordered by the 6th Commandment. More than 80% of the Flemish population had to memorize the religious Commandments (HUMO modified a few sentences). |
