The present surveys aimed at obtaining information on the status of dietary life of kindergarteners used a questionnaire method covering 1,038 children consisting of 131 of 3 years, 452 of 4 years and 455 of 5 years from 7 kindergarteners in Niigata city in mid-July 1977. The results are summarized as follows: (1) About 63% of all children were in good health. Incidence of dental caries ranged from 79.1% (3 year-old) to 86.2(5 year-old)% and percentage of breast feeding from 13.9 (3 year-old) to 17.2 (5 year-old)%. (2) Children who took breakfast, cow's milk or green and yellow vegetables every day acounted for 85%, 50% and 39%, respectively, of the three age groups. (3) As age progressed, problems involving dietary amounts decreased and the tendency to be choosy about foods increased. (4) The four dishes best liked by the children-curry, hamburger, spaghetti and stew-agreed with the four most often prepared by their mothers; 52.0% of the mothers cooked meals primarily with their children in mind. On the other hand, topping the list of dishes disliked by the children were nimono (boiled cooking) and sunomono ( cooking with vineger). Generally, meat, fish, eggs and ham are liked, vegetables are disliked. (5) Nutritional balance was best in supper and worst in lunch. (6) The mothers have acquired the knowledge on child's dietary life largely through the mass media and, to a lesser extent, by their own mother's guidance.
