Popis: | The rabbit, because of its size and temperament, is a useful experimental animal. The main drawback to its use has been the difficulty of induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Intravenous anesthetic agents are not well tolerated and considerable experience is necessary before an acceptable survival rate is achieved. Open ether methods require an assistant and difficulty can be encountered because of mucous secretion which appears resistant to usual premeditation agents. Endotracheal cannulation by conventional methods using a laryngoscope is difficult due to the anatomy of the oropharynx [2]. Hoge et al. [I] described a method of tracheal cannulation using a specially devised speculum. This paper describes a technique of blind peroral intubation of the rabbit’s trachea with a straight metal tube. After a short practice period, the method can be mastered to give a safe, rapid surgical anesthesia. |
