Popis: | Pavo cristatus (Peafowl) is widely distributed bird but its status is unknown in urban parks in the National Capital Delhi. We surveyed four parks and city forest to determine the status and threats to peafowl. We undertook 245 surveys in these parks and observed significant differences in the sighting of individuals. Maximum density was in Deer park while no peafowl was found in Nehru Park. Peafowl perching height was negatively correlated with human disturbance and positively correlated with ground cover and canopy cover in every park. Peafowl predominately roosted in Azadiracta indica, Prosopis juliflora, and Dalbergia sissoo. A total of 173 observations were made on feeding items (62.5% plant items and 37.5% animal matter). The niche breadth of peafowl varied from 0.36 in January to 0.85 in June. This study was important from the management point of view by keeping harmony with humans and prevailing conditions of urban parks. We observed variability in independent parameters in different parks and made recommendations to conserve the peafowl and to mitigate the threats upon them in different urban parks of Delhi. |
