Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the sleep quality of tinnitus sufferers and to confirm the relationship between age, gender, tinnitus duration and tinnitus severity and sleep disturbances.Materials and methods: Sixty tinnitus patients and 60 control subjects without tinnitus were included in this study. Age, gender, duration of tinnitus were listed on a chart. Tinnitus severity was measured by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) (for tinnitus group). Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Results: The mean values of sleep efficiency, perceived sleep quality, daily disturbances for tinnitus group were significantly higher than control group (p=0.0001).Ageing in tinnitus sufferers deteriorated the sleep quality of the subjects.Analysis of the scores according to gender showed no significant differences. There was positive correlation between THI scores and the scores of sleep efficiency, perceived sleep quality and daily disturbances respectively (p=0.0001/r=0.830, p=0.0001/r=0.686, p=0.0001/r=0.713).Conclusion: There is no previous study evaluating the effect of age and tinnitus duration on sleep quality in the literature. This is the first study to declare these parameters on sleep quality. |
