Popis: The ability to maintain restful sleep decreases with age but is likely independent of age itself. Medical and psychiatric disorders, medication, circadian rhythm changes, and primary sleep disorders (such as sleep-disordered breathing, restless leg syndrome/periodic limb movement in sleep, and REM behavior disorder) all contribute to older adults’ decreased ability to maintain a full night’s sleep. Each of these disorders is treatable, and treatment should never be withheld because of age or because of assumed noncompliance.
