The teaching of geriatric medicine to undergraduate medical students at the Welsh National School of Medicine is outlined. A recent change to a block system where groups of second clinical year students rotate at three-monthly intervals through groups of specialties has given geriatric medicine a share of undergraduate teaching time equal to that of other major disciplines. The essential clinical orientation is emphasized and a scheme of bedside teaching, tutorials and seminars is described. Whereas teaching in the second clinical year is directed towards the special problems of geriatric medicine, involvement in the first clinical year is regarded as a contribution to the general teaching of basic clinical methodology. The significance of geriatric medical participation in student examinations is emphasized. |
