Popis: This chapter covers human papillomaviruses (HPV), which cause more than 10,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the cervix and more than 4,000 deaths annually each year in the United States. HPV is the third most common cancer in women worldwide, and HPV also causes genital warts and other subclinical disease, making it the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States with as many as 20 million infections. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study reported a 25% prevalence of HPV DNA from vaginal swabs of 20- to 24-year-olds. HPV produces persistent infection that is subclinical and easily transmitted via intercourse, and 80% of sexually active people become infected during their lifetime.
