Popis: Mast cells have been identified in the dermis of 3-day-old mice, and studied in the electron microscope. The metachromatic granules are electron dense bodies which appear to be made up of filamentous material. Each granule has a dense periphery and is generally surrounded by a cytoplasmic space. In addition to the granules the cytoplasm contains spherical and rod-like mitochondria of typical internal structure. Closely-packed Golgiform membranes are present in the cytoplasm together with small vesicular components but there is little or no endoplasmic reticulum contrasting with the situation found in the cytoplasm of fibroblasts.
