Additional file 1: Figure S1. Fit of the exponential probability distribution to the snag fall rates, solid black line represents the fit of the exponential distribution with λ = 14. Table S1. Mean and standard deviation (SD) of measured densities of dead wood samples in four decay stages from solid dead wood to duff wood. In the decay state classification by Hunter (1990), raw wood is defined as fresh wood with a short time since death, hence wood densities of living trees are used for fresh wood. Dead wood data were collected during the summer of 2009 on 21 Picea abies-dominated sites and 19 Fagus sylvatica dominated sites across Switzerland. To obtain wood densities, samples were dried at 105–110 °C, and for C content – at 65 °C (Dobbertin and Jüngling 2009). |
