The population in the United States (U.S.) is composed of many races from different backgrounds and cultures, which may influence how individuals are impacted by chronic diseases. This Senior Honors Project focused on the experience of those living with cancer. Specifically, we investigated the correlation between cancer patients’ race and their perceived quality of life, mental and emotional health as well as physical health. The data used for this project came from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), a large-scale survey conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) that collects primary data about health care services from people in the U.S. We focused on its Cancer Self-Administered Questionnaire (CSAQ), which asks patients about the impact of having cancer, and its Adult Self-Administered Questionnaire (SAQ), which collects socio demographic information, from 2016 and 2017.A Chi-Square analysis was conducted using a weighted complex survey approach in SPSS to determine whether there were racial differences in cancer patients’ physical, emotional, and mental health, which was measured using a Likert scale. The results of the project can help us better understand how race may play a role in the overall health and experience of cancer patients so quality of cancer care can be improved. |
