In conjunction with his fieldwork, Max Ohnefalsch-Richter (hereafter MOR) studied Cypriot art and religion. His main publication, which appeared in 1893 in German and English, summarizes his work on “Kypros, the Bible and Homer”. Alongside his substantial research endeavors, MOR was a dealer in antiques; his commercial practices revealed his shrewd and calculating behavior. Indeed, to earn a living he relied heavily on selling his share of the findings from the archeological excavations he led, as well as his personal collection. Our aim here is to highlight this aspect, both in terms of the relations he enjoyed with French scholars such as Léon Heuzey, Edmond Pottier, and Charles Clermont-Ganneau, and through the artifacts from his excavations, mainly from the necropolis of Marion, acquired by the Musée du Louvre. The present paper is part of a research project conducted within the context of the exhibition held at the Neues Museum, Berlin to mark the centenary of MOR’s death. |
