Popis: This article, the third in the series of Teaching Notes on topics in a traditional Legal Environment of Business class, deals with employment law and employment discrimination. Specifically, the article discusses four major pieces of legislation: The Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination Act of 1967, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1980, as well as the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which was enacted as a result of a decision of the United States Supreme Court. The article outlines the major provisions of each of these statutes, cites to major cases decided by federal courts, and describes any exceptions and exemptions. In addition, the article discusses job testing, bona fide occupational qualifications, and sexual harassment in the workplace. The article will offer suggestions to managers and employers in order to avoid the “pitfalls” of non-compliance with the obligations imposed by each of these important statutes and administrative regulations.
