Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) recommends that healthcare providers use a clinically-validated twelve question screening tool to screen older adult patients (65+) for fall risk, then assess and intervene based on results. Despite this recommendation, there is no gold standard questionnaire for predicting falls, and the STEADI screening tool has not been evaluated. CDC partnered with NORC, utilizing NORC’s nationally representative AmeriSpeak® Panel, to survey 1900 older adults to evaluate the capability of existing screening tools or question sets to predict falls. Nine fall risk screening tools were identified through a literature review and used to develop relevant questionnaires to survey the panel sample of older adults. This session will present the different tools and questions used to screen for fall risk, how screening questions and relevant characteristics were selected, strategies used for the engagement of study participants, and planned analyses to determine the optimal set of questions. |
