Popis: THE SERIOUSNESS of current staphylococcal disease in human beings is engaging the attention of physicians and epidemiologists. Investigators in many countries are collecting data regularly to maintain surveillance, to determine if a problem exists, and to be ready to institute control measures including use of appropriate antibiotics. The National Conference sponsored by the U. S. Public Health Service Communicable Disease Center and the National Academy of Sciences (September, 1958) recommended, among other things, that cultures be made routinely for investigation, review, and classification. Realizing the importance of the carrier state in the transmission of a disease of this nature and the possible existence of "apparently harmless" sources of infection, this investigation was undertaken to determine whether pet dogs could act as carriers in such transmission among human beings. Applying the phage typing method of Wilson and Atkinson' certain investigators studied the epidemiology of strains of staphylococci of animal origin. Smith2 studied the epidemiology of staphylococcal infections of the bovine udder and found a high proportion of coagulasepositive bovine strains susceptible to one phage-phage 42D. Investigations conducted earlier by MacDonald1" in 1946 had yielded similar results. Price, et al.,4 found that, in addition to 42D phage strains, staphylococci of group III were common. Rountree, et al.,5 examined nasal swabs and found six carriers among 35 hospitalized dogs belonging to the following phage patterns
