Popis: European Union is growing since new member states enter this organization. The main purpose of EU synergy is to be competitive in the world with aims of economic and social cohesion and regional development. An increasing share of EU budget devoted to Regional Policy draws big attention of economist's who are analyzing the impact of the structural support on economic growth. It is important to identify the results of the former programming period's structural support in order to plan more effective use and implementation of the new EU structural assistance for the period 2014-2020. Multivariate statistical analysis for European Union states’ NUTS2 level socio-economic data was performed in the paper. The results showed that despite long lasting purposeful structural funds allocations there are still big regional development gaps between European Union member states. The performed research identified the clusters of socio-economic similarity and indicated groups of states. The recommendations suggesting groups of states that should be paid more attention in allocating funds and revising regional performance was made.
