Popis: | Cell ghosts of the dimorphic bacterium, Caulobacter crescentus CB2, have been prepared. Ghosts of the swarmer and stalked cells retain the individual morphology of the vegetative cells. The only sugars present in the ghosts are those characteristic of peptidoglycan, i.e., N -acetylmuramic acid and N -acetylglucosamine. Quantitation of the molar ratios of the principle amino acids present in the ghosts demonstrates that whereas the stalked cell contains glutamic acid, alanine, and diaminopimelic acid in a ratio (1:1.7:0.94) similar to the peptidoglycan composition of other Gram-negative bacteria, the swarmer cell peptidoglycan lacks diaminopimelic acid and contains only one-half the amount of alanine compared to stalked cell peptidoglycan. Molar ratios of these same amino acids in the predivisional cell are intermediate to those found in the swarmer and stalked cells. |
