Popis: | Biopsy specimens from two young Caucasian patients were examined by means of electron microscopy after histologic and histochemical study had raised strong suspicion of Burkitt’s lymphoma. In both cases, the results of histochemical analysis were equivocal. Electron microscopy not only revealed the characteristic nuclear and nucleolar features of the primitive lymphoreticular cells but also documented the presence in the cytoplasm of abundant ribosomes, frequent lipid inclusions, and absence of glycogen particles. These results reflected the classic histochemical triad of pyroninophilia, oil red O positivity, and PAS negativity. The present experience suggests that electron microscopic examinations can often establish the diagnosis of Burkitt’s lymphoma more conclusively than light microscopy, especially in cases in which the biopsy material has surgical and fixation artifacts. |
