Popis: This talk was presented on 2021 April 8 - 11 at the 39th meeting of the West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics.Provided abstract:We discuss two well-known disjoint reference effects involving the implicit external argument of passives. We show that, contrary to the common assumption, these effects cannot be derived from Principle B/C. This invalidates a strong argument for the claim that the external argument of passives is represented in syntax. We further show, based on experimental evidence, that the two disjoint reference effects can be overcome in particular contexts and we provide a pragmatic explanation. For inquiries regarding the contents of this dataset, please contact the Corresponding Author listed in the README.txt file.
