A connexion between the anisotropic thermal expansion and the changes in structure of the series of modifications of uranium, neptunium and plutonium during heating has been established. It is shown that in all structures considered anisotropic thermal expansion depends on the weakening with rise in temperature of four covalent bonds which are non-uniformily distributed in direction. Correlation of this behaviour enables deeper understanding of several specific properties, of uranium, neptunium and plutonium, distinguishing them from more common metals. |
