Airbus DS is developing a modular electric propulsion system for the needs of current and future telecommunication satellites. The system bases on the flight proven Radio Freqquency Ion Thruster "RIT" technology, building blocks for system qualification and the Airbus DS knowhow in successful industrialization of space systems. Initially, this paper describes the current environment for electric propulsion. The function principle of the RIT technology is explained.. An overview of past missions and qualification activities is provided. The Airbus DS RIT thruster and system portfolio together with its newest member, RIT 2X is presented. RIT2X is the thrust augmented evolution of RIT 22. In winter 2013/2014 Airbus conducted the RIT 22 Technology Maturity Demonstration activity. The activity links the past RIT 22 development with the new RIT 2X development. It addresses both thruster performance and system aspects. |
