Popis: | It has been known for some time that various breeds of fowls differ as to their practicability for use in androgen assays when the comb is used as the test organ. Thus the White and Brown Leghorns and the English Game Cock have been used on the basis of their relatively high sensitivity to androgens. The interest in the difference in comb reactivity goes beyond the question of utility of various breeds in the androgen assay. The reasons for the differences in the reactivity may serve as a valuable clue to the factors which operate in the reactivity of the comb to androgens as well as the mechanism of action of the androgens on the comb. This communication deals with experiments on the reactivity of the combs in various species of fowls to androgens when the hormone was administered by direct application to the comb. |
