This chapter discusses a case study to demonstrate the need to challenge both the scope and the business environment in order to establish the true benefits and rationale for the hurricane preparedness project. The core principle of this project is whether benefits of implementing preparedness outweigh the costs – particularly given that there is a high likelihood that the expenditure would either be wasted (no hurricane strike) or of no value. The project illustrates the advantages of using appropriate benefit and scope identification and challenge tools where there is either a very “soft” benefit or a marginal case for implementation. The likelihood of a hurricane strike on the facility was low, coupled with the fact that a really severe storm would compromise the facility anyway. However, the intangible benefits of putting in place disaster mitigation plans assisted in presenting the company in a better light to clients and staff and aided business growth. |
