This chapter sets out to examine the discursive views and perceptions of police officers over insults directed at them by particular segments of the population. Specifically, officers’ views on the slogan and utterances of “all cops are bastards” (ACAB) are explored, as well as police lived experiences with citizens who employ the motto in question. The findings presented in the chapter emanate from lengthy and in-depth discussions with four different police focus groups, namely, police constables, detectives, sergeants, and chief inspectors. Their reactions provide us with an insightful view over a continuum of police perceptions on and reactions to insults such as ACAB. Interestingly, at the one end of the continuum lay the police officers who feel irritated and seek to reinstate their lost pride while at the other end are situated the officers who sympathize with youth who portray or voice ACAB and, nonetheless, just let things go. |
