Popis: Today major changes of energy transmission systems are significantly demanded due to the integration of intermittent energy sources. For this purpose, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is seen as a promising approach. As a key component, polymeric insulated cable systems are increasingly used in this transmission technology. Operational and research results indicate that technical construction and design are a challenging part as electric field distribution in HVDC cable systems results from multiple influencing factors. For instance, the electric field distribution is related to the geometric design and to the varying electrical conductivity of the applied materials. Moreover, the conductivities of the used materials are affected by electric field strength and temperature distribution. Therefore, a simulation model considering the possibility of generic time-dependent numerical simulations is presented. In particular, the influences of changing material characteristics in combination with different geometric constructions are simulated. Against this background, cable accessory modelling, especially focusing on cable joints, is implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The major benefit of the simulation lies in its parametrisation allowing an adaption of thermal and electrical conductivities and operating parameters as required for the intended simulation.
