Popis: How did primogeniture come to be adopted in parts of medieval Europe? This chapter uses a historical narrative to shed light on how this succession arrangement first arose, emphasizing the Catholic Church’s influence on European family structure and heirship practices. The narrative analysis shows how these changes—and therefore the new politics of succession studied in the book—were enabled by the fragmentation of power and rudimentary royal administrations that characterized the Latin west in the early Middle Ages. It also explains why primogeniture was not adopted in the Byzantine Empire, despite shared Christianity and the advantages that it offered for both rulers and elite groups. Finally, the authors describe how primogeniture spread in their European sample over time.
