Photocatalytic processes have been studied extensively in the last decades; a big number of studies reported in scientific literature are devoted to improve the photocatalytic activity of conventional semiconductors such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide by using different alternatives; one of the most common strategies to improve the photoactivity of these oxides is their modification by noble metal addition. This modification induces absorption of the semiconductors in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which takes place mainly by color changes in the materials originally white. Thus, visible active noble metals–structured photocatalysts are successfully employed for the removal of emerging contaminants. In this chapter the reader can find a description of the most common emerging pollutants present in Latin American industrial wastewater and polluted natural watercourses, a mini-review about representative works where heterogeneous photocatalysis is employed as treatment alternative is also included in the present document. |
