The study involved the documentation and conservation guidelines for the existing and missing Cesme fountains from Ottoman Period. In addition to illustrative, written and verbal information sources, the documents containing old photographs, brief description and conservation status of the fountains obtained from the archives of Izmir Number 1 Regional Board for Conservation of Cultural and Natural Assets and the archives of Izmir Regional Board for Directory of Pious Endowments were also evaluated. In the light of this information, a thorough search was carried out for the detection of missing and unknown fountains, detailed measurements, determination of construction techniques and material use, alterations that the fountains have undergone, photographs and their verbal description formed the documentation phase of the study. Including those dismantled, shifted and reconstructed on other places, it was possible to mention 53 fountains, which contains 38 existing, 4 remained with some relics and 11 completely missing ones from Ottoman Period in the center and neighborhoods of Cesme. In the light of information obtained from the study, registration of those not listed yet and an overall conservation guideline which considers their problems and conditions of Cesme Town at present have been proposed. |
